With this week's school shooting, a lot of people are very angry, sad, depressed and fearful. It means that we care. That we want things to be better. To be kinder. To be safer. In stressful moments like these, it's important to remember that it's ok to feel what we feel. More accurately, it's important to feel what we feel. If we don't, then what we bottle up inside becomes increasingly toxic.
Many people call mindfulness a refuge because we are rescued from the sea of endless mind wandering. We're rescued from the sea of futuring and past-ing. Like, 'Okay. Yeah. I was kind of lost in daydreaming or ruminating, but now I'm back to what's real, simply by tending to this very experience without judgment. In this present moment, I am awake to what is here. Right now. This is my refuge.'

With mindfulness, it's not about getting rid of distractions or judging distractions. It's really just about being present for whatever's here - whether we like it or not, whether we planned it or not. It's part of the moment.
